Post Title: Junior Clinical Fellow in Microbiology. Base: Stockport NHS Foundation Trust

Term of Post: From Autumn 2020 (October), until autumn 2021

Name of supervising Consultant:      Dr Ibrahim Hassan, Consultant Microbiologist

The Trust: Stockport NHS Foundation Trust was established on 1st April 2004. It provides hospital and outpatient care in acute and community care for children and adults. The catchment population of our hospital services is about 350,000 (& for community services is 550,000).

Laboratory Medicine: Laboratory Medicine provides a comprehensive diagnostic service to health care providers. They offer a full range of pathology services, comprising of Blood Sciences (Clinical Biochemistry, Haematology and Blood Transfusion), Cellular Path including the mortuary service and Microbiology which includes IP. Lab has a full CPA Accreditation.


2.1 Main Job Purpose: To provide a clinical service in Medical Microbiology; working closely with the Consultants and other clinical and laboratory staff will be accountable to the Supervising Consultant.

2.2 Key Duties and Responsibilities

The Clinical Fellow (CF) will, after suitable induction and training, be expected to authorise specimens under supervision. The CF will be expected to liaise with other doctors within the hospital to discuss results and to provide clinical advice under supervision. There will be regular attendance of antibiotic stewardship ward rounds & IPC meetings.

Overall the CF can expect to get a grasp of how the laboratory functions. There will be education as to correct prescribing and control of antibiotic usage and clinical liaison.

2.3 Experience offered

Whilst this post is not recognised for training, the appointee will get exposure to learning and training opportunities. The appointee will be given opportunity to take part in appraisal and to gain clinical microbiology experience within the scope of the CF position.

If successful, this vacancy will require an enhanced DBS check at a cost of £43.50. This cost will be deducted from your first Trust salary. In addition to this it will be a condition of your employment that you will join the DBS update service and pay the annual subscription fee of £13.
